“We are the Mars Volta!”

They weren’t really Mars Volta, but a rush of wild applause came from the crowd at the White Rabbit on the night of February 11th, 2005 at about 10:20 P.M. The club was filled with the scent of cigarettes, alcohol and sweat; the crowd was a sea of black clothing and Pixies style haircuts.

This was the Forever is Never show.

For about forty-five minuets, Forever is Never (also known as FiN) put on an energy filled show that made the people in the farthest, darkest corners of the club bop up and down like bobble heads to the beat of their songs. With the hardcore fans in the front singing (and screaming) along to tunes like “Trevor” and super jumpy songs like “Dinner and a Movie”; Jason and Jaime jumping up and down in unison during “White Sharks” and the crown singing more of “Dinner and a Movie” than Jason was truly a sight to see.

But after they left the stage, they braved the cold February weather to do an interview with me.

Before I start interviews, I like to get to know the bands. Get to know the individuals that make up the inner core of the band; “learn” what they think I don’t already know (I know a lot. Research, stalking, my connections from friends of friends of mafia members… kidding guys.)

Jason- Lead Singer, likes video games, spending time with his wife and seven month old, and he works at Blockbuster.

Jaime- Guitarist, has been playing guitar for seventeen years

David- Guitarist, has been playing guitar for thirteen years (he and Jaime are brothers)

Ben- Drummer, has been playing drums for nine or ten years

Dominic-Bassist, is a taxi dispatch/ driver and has been playing bass for twelve years now

*“How did they become FiN?”

A long time ago, Jaime, David and Jason used to be in a band called Drug Honey. Ben used to be in a band called Sucapunch. “Both those bands,” Jason said, “sucked. So we joined together, got better and now, here we are, Forever is Never.”

*“So how did you come up with the name Forever is Never?”

“It was in a poem I wrote in the eighth grade.” Jason said. “There was one line in the poem that said ‘forever is never’ and it sounded like a good name.”

*“What’s the worst thing that has happened to you music-wise?”

They told me when they were about to make it big, their manager went to jail. They had a new cd, they were supposed to have a new record deal, and a whole slew of tour dates in the U.S. and then the guy that was supposed to set this up for them, went to jail. “Which really sucked ‘cause, you know, that could have been our big break.” Jason said.

*“What is your favorite song by your band to play?”

Their favorite song varied greatly. Jason’s were “Trevor” and “Sad Clown Affair”, Jaime’s were “leave a message” and “Dinner and a Movie”, and David’s were “leave a message” and “White Shark”. Ben said he didn’t have a favorite song. “Although, I hate playing “White Shark”.” Then Jason chimed in and said “I don’t like “Whisper”.”

*”If you had to go back and change anything in your musical careers, what would it be?”

“Hmmm anything-” Jason began, “I think we should have tried to send out music to an indie label before trying to send them to major labels first and, yeah.” Then he said wished he would have learned to play the piano. When he said this, everyone agreed with him. “Piano is the basis of music. If you can play piano, you can play anything.” said Dominic

*“If you could go on tour with any band, living or dead, who would it be?”

“Hmmm who would we sound good with?” Dominic asked. They collectively came up with bands such as At The Drive-In, Sunny Day Real Estate, Quicksand, The Police, The Pixies and Jane’s Addiction.

*”Where do you see yourselves in five years?”

“A 75 Ranger!” Jason said enthusiastically (For all those who don’t speak geek, he was referring to the video game Final Fantasy.) “She’s not talking about your character in that video game,” Dominic said, “She’s talking about you.” Then he said he wanted to be the distributor of his own clothing line. Everyone else said on tour; and Ben said “Right here, hopefully still alive.”

With praises from local radio personality Brian Kendall (99.5 KISS) who said FiN is "a powerful line up of individuals that combine for some fresh in your face angst." and television anchorman Michael Valdez (Fox news at 9) who was quoted as saying "this band's time is now." you know they have to be good. This is a band who is very passionate about what they do. Their hearts and souls go into each and every one of their songs and you can tell. With a new CD to be released in March titled (----), these guys are soon to be on their way to the top.
