“ Do you hear me? Are you listening? Do you hear a word I’m saying?”
Those few lines from the Forever
is Never song, “Trevor” probably sum up the CD better than I ever could.
But since I have to write a review, I should probably tell you what I think of the CD.
Having been a FiN fan for a few years now, I still find it hard to grasp the entire concept of their music with both
hands. They’re one of those bands whom you sit down to listen to and say “hey, these guys are pretty damn good”
but you don’t quite understand what all their lyrics mean. Only is it after the fourth, fifth, sixth or (possibly) seventh
time do you even begin to understand the lines like “It’s alright, it’s ok, the games we tend to play. It’s
not good, it’s not bad…” from “A Kiss Goodnight”. It’s not that the lyrics aren’t
straight-forward , it’s just that you have to put yourself in that artistic mindset. Every time I listen to the CD I
get something new out of it; something I never caught before or something that takes on a whole new meaning.
Aside from the beautifully written lyrics of the CD “A Sad Clown Affair”, the music is just as powerful as
the wording. It is progressive and heartfelt through-out; it’s never the same and it always amplifies the emotional
level of the song. With the slow melodic rhythms of the song “A Sad Clown Affair” (the namesake of the CD)
to faster, jumpy beats like “Dinner and a Movie”.
This CD is both artistic and heartfelt. You can tell they really took their time and thought out writing the CD, which
is better than most bands now-days. That little fact right there produced music with a soul; with a sound that only this particular
band could make.
Ok so you’ve never heard Forever is Never and the above statements really don’t mean that much to you.
Let me tell you what they sound like.
I’m still not entirely sure how to describe their music. More-over it’s a blend of melodic rock and angsty
lyrics with a beat that’s hard to forget.
Their sound is like a cross between The Mars Volta and Vendetta Red. Mainly the vocalization of Mars Volta (kind of…
that’s really a vague description) and the poetic, sometimes confusing, but always beautiful lyrics of Vendetta Red.
But it’s really hard to label this band as “sounding like another band”, and if you listen to them, you’ll
see what I’m talking about.
Now criticism:
I didn’t really find anything wrong with this CD. The only song I really didn’t like was “Dinner and
a Movie”, but that’s because I like the old version of the song. That was the first FiN song I ever heard that
one fateful night listening to the radio, so that’s kind of a biased opinion. And I wasn’t too fond of “Why
Sharks Smile”. I don’t know why, so don’t ask me, I just don’t really like the song (I think it’s
kind of redundant).
If you have never heard FiN, you need to pick up their CD “A Sad Clown Affair” or go check one of their shows
out. I think you'd really like them.
“His name is Trevor and he da da da da da”
Out of a possible five, I give this CD a four. Yes, I absolutely LOVE this CD, but you really have to be into this
certain type of music to really enjoy and appreciate it.
